The vineyard
Menetou-Salon is a very old vineyard if old writings are to be believed.
Around 1100, Sarlon Le Riche, the same who gave his name to Menetou-Salon, donated vines with their winegrowers to the Abbey of Saint Sulpice les Bourges before setting out on a crusade for Jerusalem.
In 1448, the Vineyard of Menetou-Salon was bought by Jacques Coeur, 8000 Tournois pounds (about 550,000 euros. Grand financier of King Charles VII, he supplied the royal court with Menetou-Salon without any doubt.
From the 17th century, part of the wine was delivered to Bourges and the surrounding area and the rest was distilled and shipped north as alcohol.
Endowed with a wine association in 1890, the Menetou-Salon vineyard acquired the Controlled Designation of Origin in 1959. The wines come from the following municipalities: Aubinges, Humbligny, Menetou-Salon, Morogues, Parassy, ??Pigny, Quantilly, St Céols, Soulangis, Vignoux under the Aix.
Today the vineyard covers more than 611 ha. The recommended grape varieties are Sauvignon for Blanc, and Pinot Noir for Reds and Rosés.
The appellation area is limited to classified Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils (around 1090 ha).
Their distribution is as follows: 2/3 Sauvignon and 1/3 Pinot Noir.
The total annual production in 2020 is 26,891 hl (or around 4,000,000 bottles) for 87 producers.
Sales in France represent 86% and Export 14% in 31 countries, the main ones being: Netherlands - United Kingdom - Belgium - USA - Germany.
